John,
Ahh the joys of shipping!!! I have some items that are unusual to ship, fishing rods. These are 8 foot packages. The boxes and packing materials alone are $10, add to that volume based shipping and it costs about $30 to ship a rod, the good thing is I can ship 6 for the same amount, weight is irrelevant. I wanted to develop a system to ship rods without adding a "handling" charge. I think handling charges turn customers off, I know they certainly turn me off, so I wanted to avoid this like the plague. At one time I had free shipping on all my products, but with the shipping costs the way they are going, this is no longer possible.
Since Americommerce does not have a free shipping field, I had to do free shipping with weight, I figured that 0 would equal 0 charges, wrong, it has to be 0.0001. SO, any product where I make the weight 0.0001 is free shipping. I make sure that I add FREE SHIPPING to my description, and also in my page title. For the rods I developed the 30 LB weight, that automatically sets the shipping charges where they need to be including the box, and packing materials. Eric was very helpful with this. Shipping was a big headache for me and one of the reasons why I left Ameritek and came to Americommerce.
To use Fixed Shipping costs, you can use the custom shipping methods to make it happen, depending on how many products you sell and how your customers purchase these. Say you are shipping an item that the fixed shipping cost is $5.00, use a 2.0 LB weight to charge the $5 fixed shipping charge. Given that you are using fixed charges, I assume you are using USPS for your shipping. The only problem with using the custom shipping is that the customer is not able to select which carrier. When I provide free shipping it is via USPS, my choice, if the customer chooses to use FedEx, then they are responsible for the shipping. Free Shipping is always the seller's choice, at least in what I do it is. I do have the FedEx shipping option but it shows as a shipping charge, USPS shows up as a zero charge. This will work on a per item basis, so if the customer loads up the cart, your shipping will no longer be fixed, it will be cumulative. Another option is to customize shipping according to how much the customer spent. Last but not least would be to use the 0.0001 weight, and add the fixed shipping as a handling charge, if you do this, I strongly recommend that in all of your descriptions you add "our fixed shipping costs will be added to your order as a handling charge", or "Buy 1 or buy 50, your shipping costs are $4.00, which will show up as a handling charge", placed correctly, the latter statement is a buying incentive.
Another option is to add your shipping costs to your retail price and label everything as free shipping. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. Price comparison engines, and google base will beat you up even though you might be the cheapest option! Your price will show higher than everyone elses, especially if your product line has established MAP guidelines.
One thing, I do suggest you use realistic weights if you want to offer a variety of shipping options such as overnight, 2nd day air, etc. You may also want to add your credit card surcharge to the shipping. Personally I add the 4.% Visa, MC, AMEX, and Discover are tagging me, if not I would loose money on the shipping.
Best Regards,
Louis
