Applying attributes to certain variants and not others?

Can attributes be applied to certain variants of a product rather than the whole product?  We are a fruit tree nursery and would like for customers to be able to drill down by attributes such as disease resistance and cold hardiness.  These things are affected by the rootstock the variety is grafted onto, which we have set up as variants of products.  For example, a Fuji apple on standard rootstock would be drought tolerant, whereas a Fuji on dwarf rootstock would not be.

I see an "attribute" drop down box next to each variant on the variant/custom tab in the product editor, but it doesn't appear to be populated with any of the attributes I've set up.

    Erin,

I don't at this time use attributes for drilling down - but I have seen the attributes I had set up get populated into the variant attribute drop down box for the products I had set it up for. Example, I had setup attributes for Diaper Bags (I don't use them anymore so I have it disabled and can't show you an example) and the Attribute drop down box in the variants populates the attributes I had setup.

Have you uploaded attributes for that particular product after setting it up? Perhaps applying it to the product populates it? I'm not sure since I haven't used it - but I had mine setup for the product and it now populates in the variant drop down attribute list.
