Understanding Release Notes

These posts represent all major and minor changes, features, fixes, and updates made to the AmeriCommerce Software.

All posts are tagged with the major version that the update applies to. For example 2012.1 or 2012.2. The date is also representative of the version of that release.

To find out if an update applies to your site you will need to check whether the major version and date matches the version of your AmeriCommerce store. This is found in the footer of your admin in the format of 201Y.X.MDD.x

A version number is broken down into the year, major release, build date, and build number. For example 2012.2.508.1 would mean it is the 2012.2 major version released on May, 8 and is the first build of that day.

If you are interested in getting a feature applied to your site ahead of the routine update schedule please enter a support ticket.

New User - Tips for better search ratings?

Hello all, I am a new user to Americommerce.  I don't have much experience with site optimization as it relates to search ratings, but I do understand some of the core concepts and importance of it.

What I was wondering is, are there any initial tips on things I can do with my Americommerce store to better situate it in the eyes of the search engines?  Any tips would be welcome from seasoned users.  Or if there are other good blog posts that could steer me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

     Thanks!!

    Nate

Here is a link that has good information:

In addition to this post you can use many built-in AmeriCommerce features such as Custom Urls for your products, categories, content pages, etc. Custom meta tags/descriptions.

Here is a KB article on setting a canonical tag for your homepage in order to consolidate hits from /, /Default.aspx, /store/Default.aspx all to the same url:

I'm sure others have more tips to add.

Does optimizing each product landing page would help, and naming the page same as the keyword for optimization?

Re: New User - Tips for better search ratings?

Yes, every product page should be optimized.  You can start with the product name, making sure there are searches related to those keywords.  Then use the product name as the Title as a minimum then possibly adding additional words.  You can then write a custom description making sure to once again re-use the keywords, product name, etc.  For the URL, you can use this format:  /product-name.html

If you need some assistance, post either your URL or a few product names and I'll help you out.

How did implementing the tips effect your traffic?  Were you able to make gains?

Just FYI, your homepage Title tag should be modified to use the main keywords for your site.  Do the "free shipping" explanation in the meta description if you want.

Also, I would suggest changing your Add To Cart buttons to something much more bright (not purple).  Maybe the greenish color in your header, bright blue, orange, or even green.

Which site did you go to?  http://www.clickflurry.com has no greenish color int the header... I just want to make sure you aren't seeing an issue with Americommerce.

Yes, I went to the correct site.  I'm not sure what the color is, it's just not the purple or white.  I'm an SEO guy not a designer :)

I think due to the recent google updates, now you should forget SEO and just focus on providing the readers the quality contents. Google now is too difficult to understand, the more SEO friendly our websites are, the more backlink they have, the lower position they are!

Considering the hundreds of products we have on the first page of Google I would disagree. They are there due to good old tried and true SEO techniques.

Re: New User - Tips for better search ratings?

Having ecommerce enable small and large clients since 1997 with many still online taking orders from SE generated traffic you'll need to use every good white hat SEO practice mentioned here. All the Google SERP slapping going on starting with last years Panda update is to eliminate lousy customer facing pages from getting on page 1-3. Google has 30,000 human doing nothing but ranking SERP listings for popular article and product buying keywords. The human ranking are passed to the Google Algo programmers to tweek those they think aren't deserving of page one listings. It's all about the customer (Google's searcher) satisfaction and eliminating SEO page rank trickery, Paid Adword click traps getting in organic listings, adware/spyware/web bug drive-by installs. I sometimes eat lunch with GooglePlex staffers and grunts in Ann Arbor....

As pointed out here organize everything to engage a shopper as #1 object of your page is to optomize the customer facing content and images on your keyword landing page. Seldom does a deep link product page get traffic from more then 4 keyword combos. Category pages are more general and might get SERP traffic form 6-8 keywords. Google & it's employees all rate a pages staying on page one based upon the Google Searchers reaction to the landing page.. 1. Length of time on page and no immediate exit. 2. Deeper browsing & more clicks within the domain add to the time spent from a Google SERP click. 3. If landing page is detected as a Merchant page ( working add to cart button ) you get to excape the new site/page Google sandbox as they consider merchants as a responsible authority class fuduciary liable for order fulfillment.

So organize you page keywords without stuffing them and write the painful extensive text about your specific product or service and treat every product page as a first impression home page... Google will! Engage your customer and pray they stay a long time on every click to your domain. If so ... your page one material regardless of Google Algorythem changes.

Now I pleased to learn switching to Americommerce I can keep my clients hard earned page one SERP listings in place by keeping the same URL names with building out the same number of Americommerce pages... + new ones with SEO friendly .htm names. I'm just starting here bringing over clients like Holdup Suspender Company www.suspenders.com and my just launched Satellite sales site http://www.holdup-suspenders.com that escaped the Google new site sandbox.

I'm curious if you consider mentioning a URL in 75% of forum posts white hat SEO?
    Thanks,

I think this would be considered white hat. But this would be costly to set up.
